Imagine Your Child's Future
This first exercise invites you to pause and imagine what a flourishing life could look like for your child. How would you like him to be? What would you like him to be able to do? What do you think about your child living independently? Do you expect him to be employed? What are your dreams for his future relationships? How involved would you like him to be with his community?
Where possible, include your child in conversation about his own hopes for the future.
As a parent, you hold a powerful and special vision for your child’s future - one that is shaped by love, understanding, and deep knowledge of who they are. While there may be many uncertainties along the way, starting with hope allows you to plan with purpose. Envisioning the future is the first step toward creating it.
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Our Hopes for the Future (Example)
Below is an example created by Jon’s parents.
Jon will lead a calm, fulfilling, and independent life, shaped by his love for nature, art, and learning. He will live in a safe and supportive home that respects his need for space and autonomy.
Jon will spend his time meaningfully - drawing digital artwork, taking on small freelance commissions, and deepening his knowledge through courses and nature walks. His passion for history, birds, and plants will keep him connected to the world around him.
With a thoughtful network of people and structures in place, Jon will be able to enjoy the routines he loves, build social connections at his own pace, and continue growing into the person he is meant to be. His life will be rooted in dignity, safety, and joyful engagement.
Activity: Our Hopes for the Future
Create a simple statement of your hopes for your child. It can be as simple as you wish it to be, as long as it paints a clear and bright picture of the future you dream of for your child.
