As seen from the profiles of Alvin, Boon Poh, and Davina, every individual will benefit from different arrangements of meaningful engagement, depending on their strengths and needs.
Some parents may wish for their child to find paid work so that they can earn an income. However, it is important to understand that not every child will be work-ready upon graduation from school. There are several factors that will affect your child’s readiness for work. Examples include:
- Attention to detail
- Communication skills
- Time management skills
- Teamwork skills
- Conflict management skills
- Problem-solving skills
- Professionalism
In addition to this list would be the technical skills that your child will need to be able to perform the roles and responsibilities of the job. You may wish to use these aspects as a guide in assessing your child’s suitability for paid work.
In reality, there are individuals with disabilities who may never be able to engage in paid work. But this does not mean that they will not be able to enjoy the benefits of meaningful engagement, as shown in Alvin’s and Davina’s profiles.
